What is digital sustainability, really?

A smaller footprint. A more meaningful digital future.

THE DIGISUSTAINABILITY KNOWLEDGE HUB

Digital is physical

Every digital experience depends on physical infrastructure: devices, networks, and data centers. These consume electricity, water, and materials. Digital sustainability means considering those impacts across a product’s entire life cycle, not just when it is running.

Less impact, lasting value

A sustainable digital product uses resources thoughtfully while remaining useful, accessible, and maintainable. That means reducing unnecessary computation and data transfer, supporting older devices, and designing services that solve real problems rather than encourage endless consumption.

Start with the work that matters

Map the resources your service uses. Establish a baseline, identify its busiest operations, and measure the effect of changes. Smaller assets, fewer requests, sensible retention policies, and longer-lived hardware are practical places to begin.
