The carbon behind your code
An introduction to Software Carbon Intensity.
A useful measure
The Software Carbon Intensity (SCI) specification expresses emissions per functional unit, such as a completed transaction or a user served. Its equation is SCI = ((E × I) + M) / R: energy consumed, multiplied by the carbon intensity of electricity, plus allocated embodied hardware emissions, divided by the functional unit.
Set the boundary first
Define what your measurement includes: application servers, storage, networking, and end-user devices where appropriate. Choose a functional unit that reflects useful output. Record assumptions and data sources so comparisons remain meaningful.
Improve, then measure again
Reduce energy per operation, shift flexible work toward cleaner electricity when feasible, and make better use of existing hardware. A lower SCI is not proof of lower total emissions if usage grows substantially; track absolute emissions alongside intensity.
